The Chitose Salmon Aquarium Specializes (千歳さけのふるさと館)

Chitose Salmon Aquarium is located on the Chitose River in Hokkaido Japan. This river originates from the beautiful waters of Lake Shikotsu in central Hokkaido then joins Hokkaido’s largest river the Ishikari, which in turn flows into the Sea of Japan.

There is much to see and do at the Aquarium, besides the large life-like aquariums inside the facility there is an education room featuring large screened moniters that explain the wondrous ecology of Salmon. While you are here don’t miss the underwater viewing opportunity of the Chitose River.

Another attraction worth mentioning is the “Fish Wheel”. Installed for the months of August to November (Japan’s Fall) when the salmon are returning to spawn, the Fish Wheel is used to collect Salmon. Later, the salmon are artificially spawned, and the fry reared at a hatchery. They are then released back into the wild the following year where they head out to sea. You are welcome to come down and see the water wheel at anytime but for best viewing please come in the Fall when the Salmon are returning.(text from official web site)

The Fish Wheel

The fish Wheel is a device used to capture adult returning Salmon. The fish wheel essentially scoops the fish from the river and relocates them live into a holding container. Later a crew will come and utilise these fish for the collection of eggs and milt. The eggs and milt are combined together for the production of salmon fry. Each year the fish wheel collects about 300, 000 salmon from the river. The operation of the Fish Wheel is seasonal, usually it is in use from Late August to the early of December. Outside of this time frame it is removed from the river.
Visitors are always welcome to come down and see it in operation.(text from official web site)
